The BIOS. The bios also known as basic input output system
is a system software that help control the basic input and output devices
attached to your computer. These input output devices are like the Video
Graphics accelerator which process graphics to be displayed by your monitor,
the keyboard, the memory and other basic devices required by your computer to
start functioning. During the POST or power on self test, your computer usually
tests these basic input output using the software known as BIOS.
DRIVERS these are set of instructions that are meant to
allow the CPU communicate, access and utilize other hardware components resources
in your computer eg the sound card. The sound card installed on your computer
requires compatible drivers to be able to receive and process requests coming
from the CPU or the processor. The limitation of adding more peripheral
components to your computer is only limited by the availability of this type of
system software.
COMPILERS these are set of programs that compile programs
written in other non binary language to a machine understandable language.
OPERATING SYSTEM these are programs that put your computer
into a working mode. They facilitate the communication between the user and the
CPU. They let the user access the computer resources without much difficulty.
The example of these software programs are like Microsoft Windows, Microsoft
DOS, LINUX, UNIX, and more. There are thousands of operating systems in the
world today.
After getting a slight introduction to the system software
class, it is time we move on to the other remaining class of software, the application
software. The application software is the last layer of software running on
your computer. They are designed to help you get what you want from the
computer. They help you burn CDs, listen to music, create documents, design
graphics, record and manipulate sound, edit and render videos while not putting
any limitation to what you can do or perform with your computer. Anything is
possible with them. They are extremely outstanding. The good thing about them
is that they are available for download whether free or for sale and the
limitation to this vast resource of unexplored world is the speed of your
internet connection and the size of your Hard Disk. Believe it or not these two
things are your only worst friends if you don’t have them.
The availability of these programs, tend to make life simple
and easy. As we have seen. During the early years of computers before CDs and
flash disks were invented files were stored in floppy disks. These floppy disks
were small and could not hold large files as is today with flash disks or
CD-roms. Computers were booted or started from floppy disks instead of Hard
disk as is today. In those days you were required to keep a separate floppy
disk that contained system startup information. Today that have been changed by
a new technology that introduced hard disks, a disk that can store large a
mount of files and also offer faster access speed than any other file storage
technology available.
All said and done let take a quick tour of available
application software but before that we should know the source of application
software. The sources of Application software are large companies that employ
programmers to write and test these application software before release. There
are many companies as much as there are software available in the market today.
Individuals are also contributors to the application software. There is also
the open source community where everyone contributes to the development a
